This is one for the folks who live near, and frequent, the Sonic Drive-Ins (which I think are only the southern part of the U.S.; I think Jefferson, Missouri, is about as far north as I've seen 'em).
The one near me is now advertising on its signboard: "Try a Seaweed Slush Today!"
Now, I am not a regular Sonic customer (tho' I have been known to stop in for a cherry limeade after a day in the field, and sometimes, when you really gotta have an ice cream, they're the easiest way to get it). But I'm puzzled by this:
Is it some SpongeBob SquarePants tie-in I've not heard of?
Is it made to resemble seaweed (and, if so, why?)
Is it made OF seaweed? (I mean, aside from the carrageenan and other algae-derived gums and stabilizers they put in things).
Of those, the last possibility is the most intriguing and yet the most scary.
Has anyone tried one of these, or seen them close up? What are they? I'm not quite willing to pull in and order one. (Though I might, if no one else seems to know and I'm bored some afternoon.)

Well, I've actually had seaweed as a savory side dish in a fish restaurant, and enjoyed it very much. But I can't imagine it sweet...the texture is a bit crunchy, almost like a wilted coleslaw.

the closest i've come to seaweed is nori in a sushi roll.

Hmm. I'm not sure about that. Doesn't sound too great but I thought Chicago has a Sonic?
I have no idea but did you know that you're the number one Google result for sonic seaweed slush?
