Man. I had forgotten how exhausting summer teaching can be. (Wednesdays, when I teach a lab from 1:30 to 5:20, especially).

I know I try to post every weekday but I just may not make that during the rest of the summer. There may be just some nights when I come home and crash and have nothing to talk about.

That said - I've almost finished the ribbing on the first horseshoe crab sock, so I'm getting ready to start the patterning. It will be interesting to see how it looks; the picture in the book just isn't that clear.

The "weak linguistic joke" I referred to has to do with the comic (strip? Book? Not sure what you'd call it) Tintin.

In English, Tintin's little dog is known as "Snowy." It seems that "Snowy" would be an obvious name for a baby snow dragon. But it seemed TOO obvious.

However, in French, Snowy's name is Milou (which has nothing to do with snow; one theory is that Milou was the nickname of the mistress of Herge, the man who drew the comic).

So I named him Milou after the little dog that I know better as Snowy.

(I heard a rumor that Speilberg was going to make a Tintin movie. That could either be very bad or very good depending on how it turns out - it could be another "Popeye starring Robin Williams" (remember that?) or it could be more like the movie adaptations of the Tolkien books...I suspect it will largely come down to who they choose to play the different roles, and if they manage to get people who BECOME the role, or if they wind up getting people who, like Robin Williams, you kind of go, "Oh, it's Robin Williams as Popeye." If you get what I mean. I guess what I'm saying is I tend to prefer actors like Dustin Hoffman who are better at covering up their real-life self in the role, than someone like, I don't know, Jim Carrey, who it's immediately obvious it's Jim Carrey playing a role.

And yes, I heard it was going to be a live-action movie, which actually sounds more intriguing to me than a cartoon version...almost anybody could probably do a decent cartoon version of Tintin; a successful live-action would be a lot harder)

I think "I Can Has Cheezburger?" is warping me a little bit. Yesterday, in lab, we were doing soil testing. I do not like students to put the soil down the sink (it clogs the pipes), nor do I like them to just throw it in the trash (makes more work for the custodian). So I have some big five-gallon containers I have them put it in, so we can then dump it outside.

As I put them out, I said, "....and don't throw the used soil in the trash. We have a bucket."

And immediately, the immature part of my brain thought of this whole situation. (And it's become a running joke...there are more "bucket" jokes on that site. I've even heard of people using "I has a bucket!" as a way of announcing they have a job)

I didn't say, "We has a bucket!" out loud, but I sure thought it.
