Sunday, I felt like working on quilts.
So after church, I cut the rest of the pieces for the Paris Flea Market quilt. And I picked up the furniture and swept my living room floor to give myself room to lay the quilt out. (it's about 400, 4 1/2 inch squares). 20 by 24 four-and-a-half inch squares take up a surprising amount of room, but by my calculations, that's what I'll need for a finished size of about 80 x 96.
I briefly considered just putting them all in a bag, shaking well, and pulling out random pairs to sew together, like you're supposed to do with the old Chinese Coins quilt pattern. But then I decided that that would Go Against my Fillyjonk Nature, so I settled in and started laying out squares.
It takes a long time.
By the end, I was kind of just throwing down squares, and really only worrying if two of the same fabric were too close to each other.
Then I gathered all the rows up, pinned them and numbered them. But I didn't have the energy to start sewing, after all that.
I wonder how people who have a hard time crawling around on the floor (I'm thinking in particular of a quilter my mother knows who uses a wheelchair) do the lay-out thing. I suppose they have design walls, something I don't have room for.
I did a bit more handquilting on the long-stalled quilt in the frame. I've decided I want to try to finish it this summer if I can. I've got another quilt top that I really want to hand-quilt (rather than paying to have it machine-quilted), and I'll never get to it if I don't finish the one in the frame now.
