Here are the pictures I forgot to bring with me this morning:

(Yeah, I'm calling him Steggy. Sort of a dumb name but none of the other ones I tried out fit - either they were too grandiose or too clunky or they were the names of people I knew...I have a thing about giving a critter the same name as a person I already know well. That kind of limits things sometimes.)

I enjoyed knitting this pattern. It went very quickly and even the sewing-up part, which I usually hate, was not too bad. I did make two minor mods to the pattern as written: first, I used kfb as the increase on the spines because my yfd's at the front of a row look ugly and sloppy. Also, I crocheted on his tail spikes instead of knitting them individually and sewing them on - basically, I attached the yarn and then did a ch 6 and a sc back, then did a sl st to anchor the chain onto the body. Then I passed the yarn through the tail (I had cut off a long piece to do this with) and did a ch 6, sc back, sl st on the other side.

I want to do the triceratops sometime too.

I think with a few modifications - maybe using a version of Bronty's head, only made more pointy and snouty, and the spiney back from the stegosaurus, and maybe adding a pair of winglike structures, you could knit yourself a pretty respectable dragon.

I also think with a few mods you could turn Mr. Stegs into an armadillo - leave off the spiney back but knit the body with nine narrow garter st bands inserted. Also, you'd probably want to make the head bigger and the snout pointier, and the tail smaller and thinner....
