One of my favorite knitting projects is (are?) socks. So here are some sites filled with socknitting goodness:
Free patterns and general information can be found at Socknitters (For some things, it may ask for a yahoo username and password which is a bit annoying). Then there is The Sockguy, which has some keen free patterns and also some useful links. And then there is MY personal favorite, Whippoorwill Hill. The best part of the site is the Heels by number, which gives details on how to turn a wide variety of heels on almost all sizes and weights of yarn. (If you design socks, this page is like gold to you).
As Wayne and Garth would say, "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!"
There's also a lot of free-pattern goodness at Sarah Bradberry Though recently Sarah has had problems with people taking the free patterns and selling them - that is a big no-no. You cannot profit from a pattern someone else has written and agreed to distribute for free. (I'm saying this in the hopes that no one will do this to Sarah anymore, lest she get angry and take the whole page down).
Then there are the places to buy yarn. Here are a couple sockyarn specific sites:
The knitter Which also has lots and lots of patterns for sale
Fifth Stitch another sockyarn site
Redbird knits I've not ordered from them yet, they are a Canadian site
Yarn Forward A Canadian site I have ordered from; the prices are great but the mails can be slow from Canada.
And then there's PT yarns the U.S. home of Opal goodness.
I've ordered from all but Redbird and can pretty well vouch for all of them.
